It all started back in 2000 when I arrived at Florida State University with a car full of clothes, a Dell computer, a blanket, and $500 bucks. I wasn't too prepared, but it didn't really matter - I was in college!

I was 19 at the time and fresh into the world. My thoughts of college before I arrived were only those from what my brother had told me (very good!) and from one of the greatest movies of all time - Animal House. To my surprise, FSU was Animal House - my fraternity house was "the house."

I ended up sleeping at the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house for my first semester. A crazy place to say the least. As a pledge you have to do some pretty stupid things, but my first stupid thing was to raise money for the fraternity and here's where I got...

My First Credit Card

My first week as a pledge, our fraternity president, Mark Xxxxxx, had my new pledge class of 67 freshmen go out and raise money for a new fence.

Our fundraising tour was to go and hand out credit card offers - one of the biggest scams of our time. Our mission was to find anyone girl, guy, dog, cat, or homeless person in "French Town" to sign on the dotted line. A signature was worth $2.

When you have 67 hungry freshmen to get in, signatures were gold to us. We did anything to raise that money...

When it was all said and done, I traded 2 kisses and brought in 5 applications. I had raised a whopping $10!

Not to mention - I filled out my first credit card application.

... 12 days later I had $500 at my disposal - the plastic that would set me free!

Yeeeeee-Haaaawwwwww!!

I was going out, buying food, college books, "Chubby Boxes" (chicken tenders and rice. A FSU favorite), Taquito's at Whataburger, and putting everything on my credit card.

1 month later ... I raised my limit to $1,000. (what can i say, i needed the money)

No problem I thought. I had a job so it was no worries. I mean Hungry Howie's pizza was paying me $0.50 per delivery PLUS tips... I was bankin'!

Yea Right!

5 Months later... $5,000 limit

My credit card was my life. It was the only thing keeping me alive besides the late night pizza from Gumby's. I was the perfect candidate for the credit companies - the ideal credit card leech.

During this time I had started an ebay company in my college apartment and needed the cash. What better place to turn to, than your credit card.

4 Years Later ... I was $7,523 in debt an a credit score that looked like Grace Jones on a good day - it was bbaaaddddd.

"You've Been Denied!"

Those were the three famous words I would always get in the mail or over the phone whenever I applied for a credit card, gas card, a loan ... pretty much anything. There was one instance not too long ago around Christmas time in 2006 where I applied for a Banana Republic Card in front of a crazy horde of buyers ready to checkout.

Here's how it went down...

The young girl asked, "Would you like to get a 20% discount on your purchase?"

I said, "Sure. But do I have to fill out an application? (I knew my credit score was shot and I'd be denied instantly)

She said, "Yes. I think you'll pass, I've never seen anyone get denied."

I quickly shot out, "Well, my credit is terrible. I know I'll get denied. Can you just give me the 20%?" (wink, wink )

She laughed and said, "No I can't, but why don't you give it a try" then the best close came next, "you have nothing to lose!"

My brain said no, but something else said, yes...

I filled out the application...

Once Again - I Was Denied!

In front of at least 40 people. It's not a pretty sight. It was embarrassing to say the least. I felt like a dufus. I thought to myself, "This sucks. I can't do anything. I can't even a get a 20% discount from a department store. This is pathetic... I've got to do something about this."

At that embarrassing moment, my mind was made up ... I was going to clean my credit.

Boom! The next day I was on a mission. The new year was coming around and 2007 was going to be a great year. I thought, "Finally, a year with good decent credit!"

But then I asked myself, "Well.....how can I clean up my credit report? I don't know anything about it. "

Where else do you turn to when you need to fix your credit? No other than - the "so-called" credit repair experts.

I knew there were credit repair agencies, but always thought these were scams so never gave it a shot until a friend of mine told me that her agency cleaned her report and deleted some of her late pays. I had no idea on how I could do it myself so I decided to give this guy a try.

This dude had an accent, definitely a Brazilian and definitely from Rio. His voice was very rough, like this has been his fifth job in the last year. But a guy I heard some good things about. Well, one good thing, a "supposed" removed late pay.

So after 15 minutes, I was instantly sold and quickly handed over my money. I mean what else was I going to do? These guys are "professionals!"

I was on my way... I thought, "Cool. In a couple of months my credit will be good and now I can start to get my life back. Yee-Haw!

...or so I thought...

I Was Scammed!

It didn't happen overnight, but over 4 months. I had wasted 4 months of my time, $334, and my credit was still the same the day I got started. I was completely frustrated!
